DEVĪMĀHĀTMYAM
GLORY OF THE DIVINE MOTHER
Devī Māhātmya, also known as Śrī Durgā Saptaśati, is a highly esteemed scripture from the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa that celebrates the victory of Goddess Durgā over malevolent forces such as Mahiṣāsura.Highlighting the significance of the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa, Sri Aurobindo noted, “....মার্কণ্ডেয় পুরাণের মত পণ্ডিত অধ্যাত্মবিদ্যাপরায়ণ লেখকের রচনাকে শিব বা অগ্নিপুরাণ অপেক্ষা গভীর জ্ঞানপূর্ণ বলিয়া চিনিতে হয় ।” (“....the Markandeya Purana written by a sage devoted to spiritual pursuits is more profound in Knowledge than either the Shiva or the Agni Purana.”) He specifically referred to the four powers of the Mother: Māheśvarī, Mahākālī, Mahāsarasvatī, and Mahālakṣmī. This text represents the victory of divine feminine energy (Śakti), fosters bravery, and underscores themes of protection, prosperity, and spiritual elevation, motivating devotees through their faith, strength, and moral integrity. The digital portal 'Devīmāhātmyam - Glory of the Divine Mother' offers profound spiritual, philosophical, and literary insights that are foundational to Indian cultural heritage, highlighting its significance in grasping the Śakti paramparā. This portal features the sacred text along with chants and translations by the distinguished scholar Shri S. Shankaranarayanan, who has interpreted the entire Devīmāhātmyam in the light of Sri Aurobindo.

Devīmāhātmya defines the nine auspicious forms of the Divine Mother: First, the daughter of the mountain; second the one who moves in Brahman; third the delightful sound; fourth the seed of incubation on earth; fifth the mother of Skanda; sixth Kātyāyanī, the eternal virgin; seventh the dark night; eighth the great white one; and ninth the one who grants perfection - thus are enumerated the nine Durgās. These names have been mentioned by the great Brahman himself.
HYMN TO DURGA BY SRI AUROBINDO
In 1909, at the height of the Indian independence movement, Sri
Aurobindo composed the Durgā Stotra, which was later published in
the Bengali journal Dharma. The purpose of this work was to invoke
the divine energy of Mother Durgā to manifest in India, providing
the nation with the courage, strength, and wisdom required to
overcome the 'forces of darkness' and achieve liberation from
oppression. This composition functioned as both a significant
spiritual invocation and a call to action for the youth of India to
serve as vessels of this divine energy for freedom and
transformation.
