English Translation

1.The Sage said:

Sanskrit

निहन्यमानं तत्सैन्यमवलोक्य महासुरः।
सेनानीश्चिक्षुरः कोपाद्ययौ योद्धुमथाम्बिकाम्॥ २॥

Transliteration

nihanyamānaṁ tatsainyamavalokya mahāsuraḥ |
senānīścikṣuraḥ kopādyayau yoddhumathāmbikām || 2||

English Translation

2.Seeing that army being slain, the great Asura, Cikṣura, the Commander - in - chief proceeded in anger to fight the Mother.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 003 ॥

Sanskrit

स देवीं शरवर्षेण ववर्ष समरेऽसुरः।
यथा मेरुगिरेः शृङ्गं तोयवर्षेण तोयदः॥ ३॥

Transliteration

sa devīṁ śaravarṣeṇa vavarṣa samare’suraḥ |
yathā merugireḥ śṛṅgaṁ toyavarṣeṇa toyadaḥ || 3||

English Translation

3.The Asura rained showers of arrows on the Goddess in battle just as a cloud would pour in showers of rain on the peak of the Meru Mountain.

Sanskrit

तस्य छित्वा ततो देवी लीलयैव शरोत्करान्।
जघान तुरगान्बाणैर्यन्तारं चैव वाजिनाम्॥ ४॥

Transliteration

tasya chitvā tato devī līlayaiva śarotkarān |
jaghāna turagānbāṇairyantāraṁ caiva vājinām || 4||

English Translation

4.Then the Goddess playfully cutting asunder the volley of arrows, killed his horses and their driver with her arrows.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 005 ॥

चिच्छेद च धनुः सद्यो ध्वजं चातिसमुच्छ्रतम्।
विव्याध चैव गात्रेषु छिन्नधन्वानमाशुगैः॥ ५॥

Transliteration

ciccheda ca dhanuḥ sadyo dhvajaṁ cātisamucchratam |
vivyādha caiva gātreṣu chinnadhanvānamāśugaiḥ || 5||

English Translation

5.Immediately, she broke his bow and his banner flying aloft; and with swift shafts struck in the limbs of him whose bow had been broken.

सच्छिन्नधन्वा विरथो हताश्वो हतसारथिः।
अभ्यधावत तां देवीं खड्गचर्मधरोऽसुरः॥ ६॥

Transliteration

sacchinnadhanvā viratho hatāśvo hatasārathiḥ |
abhyadhāvata tāṁ devīṁ khaḍgacarmadharo’suraḥ || 6||

English Translation

6.His bow broken, his chariot smashed, his horse killed and his charioteer slain, the Asura wielding a sword and a shield jumped at the Goddess.

Sanskrit

सिंहमाहत्य खड्गेन तीक्ष्णधारेण मूर्धनि।
आजघान भुजे सव्ये देवीमप्यतिवेगवान्॥ ७॥

Transliteration

siṁhamāhatya khaḍgena tīkṣṇadhāreṇa mūrdhani |
ājaghāna bhuje savye devīmapyativegavān || 7||

English Translation

7.With terrific speed he struck the lion on the head with a sharp - edged sword and hit the Goddess on her left arm.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 008 ॥

Sanskrit

तस्याः खड्गो भुजं प्राप्य पफाल नृपनन्दन।
ततो जग्राह शूलं स कोपादरुणलोचनः॥ ८॥

Transliteration

tasyāḥ khaḍgo bhujaṁ prāpya paphāla nṛpanandana |
tato jagrāha śūlaṁ sa kopādaruṇalocanaḥ || 8||

English Translation

8.O Delight of kings ! the sword, the moment it touched her arm, broke into pieces. Red in the eyes with anger, he took the spear.

चिक्षेप च ततस्तत्तु भद्रकाल्यां महासुरः।
जाज्वल्यमानं तेजोभी रविबिम्बमिवाम्बरात्॥ ९॥

Transliteration

cikṣepa ca tatastattu bhadrakālyāṁ mahāsuraḥ |
jājvalyamānaṁ tejobhī ravibimbamivāmbarāt || 9||

English Translation

9.The great Asura hurled the weapon, resplendent with lustre, at Bhadrakālī, as though he was hurling the orb of the Sun from the skies.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 010 ॥

Sanskrit

दृष्ट्वा तदापतच्छूलं देवी शूलममुञ्चत। तेन तच्छतधा नीतं शूलं स च महासुरः॥ १०॥

Transliteration

dṛṣṭvā tadāpatacchūlaṁ devī śūlamamuñcata |
tena tacchatadhā nītaṁ śūlaṁ sa ca mahāsuraḥ || 10||

English Translation

10.Seeing the spear coming upon her, the Goddess released her spear. It broke his spear into a hundred pieces, as well as the great Asura.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 011 ॥

हते तस्मिन्महावीर्ये महिषस्य चमूपतौ।
आजगाम गजारूढश्चामरस्त्रिदशार्दनः॥ ११॥

Transliteration

hate tasminmahāvīrye mahiṣasya camūpatau |
ājagāma gajārūḍhaścāmarastridaśārdanaḥ || 11||

English Translation

11.When that General of Mahiṣa, of great valour, was slain, Cāmara, the afflicter of the gods came forward mounted on an elephant.

सोऽपि शक्तिं मुमोचाथ देव्यास्तामम्बिका द्रुतम्।
हुङ्काराभिहतां भूमौ पातयामास निष्प्रभाम्॥ १२॥

Transliteration

so’pi śaktiṁ mumocātha devyāstāmambikā drutam |
huṅkārābhihatāṁ bhūmau pātayāmāsa niṣprabhām || 12||

English Translation

12.He hurled his lance at the Devi. And the Mother immediately with a grunt, made it fall to the ground lustreless.

भग्नां शक्तिं निपतितां दृष्ट्वा क्रोधसमन्वितः।
चिक्षेप चामरः शूलं बाणैस्तदपि साच्छिनत्॥ १३॥

Transliteration

bhagnāṁ śaktiṁ nipatitāṁ dṛṣṭvā krodhasamanvitaḥ |
cikṣepa cāmaraḥ śūlaṁ bāṇaistadapi sācchinat || 13||

English Translation

13.Seeing his lance broken and fallen, Cāmara, filled with anger, hurled the spear. She broke it as well with her arrows.

ततः सिंहः समुत्पत्य गजकुम्भान्तरे स्थितः।
बाहुयुद्धेन युयुधे तेनोच्चैस्त्रिदशारिणा॥ १४॥

Transliteration

tataḥ siṁhaḥ samutpatya gajakumbhāntare sthitaḥ |
bāhuyuddhena yuyudhe tenoccaistridaśāriṇā || 14||

English Translation

14.Then, the lion leaped upwards, seated itself between the temples of the elephant and engaged itself in a hand to hand fight with that enemy of the gods.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 015 ॥

Sanskrit

युध्यमानौ ततस्तौ तु तस्मान्नागान्महीं गतौ।
युयुधातेऽतिसंरब्धौ प्रहारैरतिदारुणैः॥ १५॥

Transliteration

yudhyamānau tatastau tu tasmānnāgānmahīṁ gatau |
yuyudhāte’tisaṁrabdhau prahārairatidāruṇaiḥ || 15||

English Translation

15.In the course of fighting, they came down from the elephant to the ground and fought quite excited, dealing each other terrible blows.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 016 ॥

Sanskrit

ततो वेगात् खमुत्पत्य निपत्य च मृगारिणा।
करप्रहारेण शिरश्चामरस्य पृथक् कृतम्॥ १६॥

Transliteration

tato vegāt khamutpatya nipatya ca mṛgāriṇā |
karaprahāreṇa śiraścāmarasya pṛthak kṛtam || 16||

English Translation

16.Then, the foe of beasts leaped to the sky with force and from there sprang on Cāmara, severing his head with a blow of its paw.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 017 ॥

Sanskrit

उदग्रश्च रणे देव्या शिलावृक्षादिभिर्हतः।
दन्तमुष्टितलैश्चैव करालश्च निपातितः॥ १७॥

Transliteration

udagraśca raṇe devyā śilāvṛkṣādibhirhataḥ |
dantamuṣṭitalaiścaiva karālaśca nipātitaḥ || 17||

English Translation

17.Udagra was killed in battle of the Devi by means of rocks, trees and the like. Karāla was brought down by biting with her teeth, hitting with her fist and slapping with her palm.

देवी क्रुद्धा गदापातैश्चूर्णयामास चोद्धतम्।
बाष्कलं भिन्दिपालेन बाणैस्ताम्रं तथान्धकम्॥ १८॥

Transliteration

devī kruddhā gadāpātaiścūrṇayāmāsa coddhatam |
bāṣkalaṁ bhindipālena bāṇaistāmraṁ tathāndhakam || 18||

English Translation

18.The Devi in wrath pulverised Uddhata with strokes of her mace. She slew Bāskala with a javelin, Tāmra and Andhaka with arrows.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 019 ॥

Sanskrit

उग्रास्यमुग्रवीर्यं च तथैव च महाहनुम्।
त्रिनेत्रा च त्रिशूलेन जघान परमेश्वरी॥ १९॥

Transliteration

ugrāsyamugravīryaṁ ca tathaiva ca mahāhanum |
trinetrā ca triśūlena jaghāna parameśvarī || 19||

English Translation

19.The great Goddess, possessed of three eyes, smote and slew Ugrasya, Ugravīrya and Mahāhanu with her trident.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 020 ॥

Sanskrit

बिडालस्यासिना कायात् पातयामास वै शिरः।
दुर्धरं दुर्मुखं चोभौ शरैर्निन्ये यमक्षयम्॥ २०॥

Transliteration

biḍālasyāsinā kāyāt pātayāmāsa vai śiraḥ |
durdharaṁ durmukhaṁ cobhau śarairninye yamakṣayam || 20||

English Translation

20.By her sword, she made the head of Biḍāla fall from his body and sent Durdhara and Durmukha to the abode of death by her arrows.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 021 ॥

Sanskrit

एवं सङ्क्षीयमाणे तु स्वसैन्ये महिषासुरः।
माहिषेण स्वरूपेण त्रासयामास तान् गणान्॥ २१॥

Transliteration

evaṁ saṅkṣīyamāṇe tu svasainye mahiṣāsuraḥ |
māhiṣeṇa svarūpeṇa trāsayāmāsa tān gaṇān || 21||

English Translation

21.Seeing his own army being demolished thus Mahiṣāsura terrified the hosts of the Devi with his buffalo form.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 022-023 ॥

Sanskrit

कांश्चित्तुण्डप्रहारेण खुरक्षेपैस्तथापरान्।
लाङ्गूलताडितांश्चान्यान् शृङ्गाभ्यां च विदारितान्॥ २२॥
वेगेन कांश्चिदपरान्नादेन भ्रमणेन च।
निःश्वासपवनेनान्यान्पातयामास भूतले॥ २३॥

Transliteration

kāṁścittuṇḍaprahāreṇa khurakṣepaistathāparān |
lāṅgūlatāḍitāṁścānyān śṛṅgābhyāṁ ca vidāritān || 22||
vegena kāṁścidaparānnādena bhramaṇena ca |
niḥśvāsapavanenānyānpātayāmāsa bhūtale || 23||

English Translation

22-23. Hitting by the muzzle some, trampling by the hooves some others, lashing by his tail some, tearing by his horns some others, with sheer speed some, with bellowing and whirling about some others and with the blast of his breath the rest, he laid the hosts on the ground.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 024 ॥

Sanskrit

निपात्य प्रमथानीकमभ्यधावत सोऽसुरः।
सिंहं हन्तुं महादेव्याः कोपं चक्रे ततोऽम्बिका॥ २४॥

Transliteration

nipātya pramathānīkamabhyadhāvata so’suraḥ |
siṁhaṁ hantuṁ mahādevyāḥ kopaṁ cakre tato’mbikā || 24||

English Translation

24.After laying low the hosts of Pramathas, that Asura leaped to slay the lion of the great Goddess. Seeing this, the Mother became angry.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 025 ॥

Sanskrit

सोऽपि कोपान्महावीर्यः खुरक्षुण्णमहीतलः।
शृङ्गाभ्यां पर्वतानुच्चांश्चिक्षेप च ननाद च॥ २५॥

Transliteration

so’pi kopānmahāvīryaḥ khurakṣuṇṇamahītalaḥ |
śṛṅgābhyāṁ parvatānuccāṁścikṣepa ca nanāda ca || 25||

English Translation

25.He too, of great valour, pounded the terrain with his hooves in rage, threw about the mountains with his horns and roared.

Sanskrit

वेगभ्रमणविक्षुण्णा मही तस्य व्यशीर्यत।
लाङ्गूलेनाहतश्चाब्धिः प्लावयामास सर्वतः॥ २६॥

Transliteration

vegabhramaṇavikṣuṇṇā mahī tasya vyaśīryata |
lāṅgūlenāhataścābdhiḥ plāvayāmāsa sarvataḥ || 26||

English Translation

26.Crushed by his whirling speed, the earth crumbled to pieces; lashed by his tail the ocean flooded everywhere.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 027 ॥

Sanskrit

धुतशृङ्गविभिन्नाश्च खण्डं खण्डं ययुर्घनाः।
श्वासानिलास्ताः शतशो निपेतुर्नभसोऽचलाः॥ २७॥

Transliteration

dhutaśṛṅgavibhinnāśca khaṇḍaṁ khaṇḍaṁ yayurghanāḥ |
śvāsānilāstāḥ śataśo nipeturnabhaso’calāḥ || 27||

English Translation

27.Broken by his moving horns, the clouds went into pieces. His heaving breath lifted up mountains in the sky and brought them down.

**

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 028 ॥

Sanskrit इति क्रोधसमाध्मातमापतन्तं महासुरम्।
दृष्ट्वा सा चण्डिका कोपं तद्वधाय तदाकरोत्॥ २८॥

Transliteration

iti krodhasamādhmātamāpatantaṁ mahāsuram |
dṛṣṭvā sā caṇḍikā kopaṁ tadvadhāya tadākarot || 28||

English Translation

28.Seeing the great Asura bloated with rage advancing towards her, she Chaṇḍikā, assumed an angry mood in order to kill him.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 029 ॥

Sanskrit

सा क्षिप्त्वा तस्य वै पाशं तं बबन्ध महासुरम्।
तत्याज माहिषं रूपं सोऽपि बद्धो महामृधे॥ २९॥

Transliteration

sā kṣiptvā tasya vai pāśaṁ taṁ babandha mahāsuram |
tatyāja māhiṣaṁ rūpaṁ so’pi baddho mahāmṛdhe || 29||

English Translation

29.She threw the noose over the great Asura and bound him. Thus bound in the great battle, he left off his buffalo form.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 030 ॥

Sanskrit

ततः सिंहोऽभवत्सद्यो यावत्तस्याम्बिका शिरः।
छिनत्ति तावत् पुरुषः खड्गपाणिरदृश्यत॥ ३०॥

Transliteration

tataḥ siṁho’bhavatsadyo yāvattasyāmbikā śiraḥ |
chinatti tāvat puruṣaḥ khaḍgapāṇiradṛśyata || 30||

English Translation

30.Then immediately he became a lion. No sooner the Mother cut the head off than a man appeared with a sword in hand.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 031 ॥

Sanskrit

तत एवाशु पुरुषं देवी चिच्छेद सायकैः।
तं खड्गचर्मणा सार्धं ततः सोऽभून्महागजः॥ ३१॥

Transliteration

tata evāśu puruṣaṁ devī ciccheda sāyakaiḥ |
taṁ khaḍgacarmaṇā sārdhaṁ tataḥ so’bhūnmahāgajaḥ || 31||

English Translation

31.Soon the Goddess cut the man asunder along with his sword and shield, by means of her arrows. Then he became a huge elephant.###

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 032 ॥

Sanskrit

करेण च महासिंहं तं चकर्ष जगर्ज च।
कर्षतस्तु करं देवी खड्गेन निरकृन्तत॥ ३२॥

Transliteration

kareṇa ca mahāsiṁhaṁ taṁ cakarṣa jagarja ca |
karṣatastu karaṁ devī khaḍgena nirakṛntata || 32||

English Translation

32.The elephant pulled the lion with its trunk and roared. As it pulled, the Goddess cut off the trunk with her sword.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 033 ॥

Sanskrit

ततो महासुरो भूयो माहिषं वपुरास्थितः।
तथैव क्षोभयामास त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम्॥ ३३॥

Transliteration

tato mahāsuro bhūyo māhiṣaṁ vapurāsthitaḥ |
tathaiva kṣobhayāmāsa trailokyaṁ sacarācaram || 33||

English Translation

33.The great Asura resumed the body of a buffalo and shook the three worlds along with their mobile and immobile things.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 034 ॥

Sanskrit

ततः क्रुद्धा जगन्माता चण्डिका पानमुत्तमम्।
पपौ पुनः पुनश्चैव जहासारुणलोचना॥ ३४॥

Transliteration

tataḥ kruddhā jaganmātā caṇḍikā pānamuttamam |
papau punaḥ punaścaiva jahāsāruṇalocanā || 34||

English Translation

34.Enraged at this, Chaṇḍikā, the Mother of the worlds, had again and again a superb drink and laughed, her eyes becoming red.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 035 ॥

Sanskrit

ननर्द चासुरः सोऽपि बलवीर्यमदोद्धतः।
विषाणाभ्यां च चिक्षेप चण्डिकां प्रति भूधरान्॥ ३५॥

Transliteration

nanarda cāsuraḥ so’pi balavīryamadoddhataḥ |
viṣāṇābhyāṁ ca cikṣepa caṇḍikāṁ prati bhūdharān || 35||

English Translation

35.The Asura too intoxicated with his strength and valour roared and threw mountains at Chaṇḍikā with his horns.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 036 ॥

Sanskrit

सा च तान्प्रहितांस्तेन चूर्णयन्ती शरोत्करैः।
उवाच तं मदोद्धूतमुखरागाकुलाक्षरम्॥ ३६॥

Transliteration

sā ca tānprahitāṁstena cūrṇayantī śarotkaraiḥ |
uvāca taṁ madoddhūtamukharāgākulākṣaram || 36||

English Translation

36.And she, with a volley of arrows, reduced to powder those that were hurled at her and said to him, her words faltering and colour mounting up her face due to the intoxication of the drinks.

37.The Goddess said :

गर्ज गर्ज क्षणं मूढ मधु यावत्पिबाम्यहम्।
मया त्वयि हतेऽत्रैव गर्जिष्यन्त्याशु देवताः॥ ३८॥

Transliteration

garja garja kṣaṇaṁ mūḍha madhu yāvatpibāmyaham |
mayā tvayi hate’traiva garjiṣyantyāśu devatāḥ || 38||

English Translation

38.Roar, roar, O fool, for a moment till I drink this wine. Soon the gods are going to roar here when you are slain by me.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 039 ॥

ऋषिरुवाच॥ ३९॥

Transliteration

ṛṣiruvāca || 39||

English Translation

39.The sage said:

एवमुक्त्वा समुत्पत्य सारूढा तं महासुरम्।
पादेनाक्रम्य कण्ठे च शूलेनैनमताडयत्॥ ४०॥

Transliteration

evamuktvā samutpatya sārūḍhā taṁ mahāsuram |
pādenākramya kaṇṭhe ca śūlenainamatāḍayat || 40||

English Translation

40.Exclaiming thus, she jumped and climbed on the great Asura. Crushing his neck under her foot, she hit him with the trident.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 041 ॥

Sanskrit

ततः सोऽपि पदाक्रान्तस्तया निजमुखात्तदा।
अर्धनिष्क्रान्त एवासीद्देव्या वीर्येण संवृतः॥ ४१॥

Transliteration

tataḥ so’pi padākrāntastayā nijamukhāttadā |
ardhaniṣkrānta evāsīddevyā vīryeṇa saṁvṛtaḥ || 41||

English Translation

41.Then, crushed by her foot, he was able to emerge only as half of his self from his own mouth, overpowered by the valour of the Goddess.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 042 ॥

Sanskrit

अर्धनिष्क्रान्त एवासौ युध्यमानो महासुरः।
तया महासिना देव्या शिरश्छित्त्वा निपातितः॥ ४२॥

Transliteration

ardhaniṣkrānta evāsau yudhyamāno mahāsuraḥ |
tayā mahāsinā devyā śiraśchittvā nipātitaḥ || 42||

English Translation

42.Continuing to fight as half of his self, the great Asura was beheaded by the Goddess with the sword and slain.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 043 ॥

ततो हाहाकृतं सर्वं दैत्यसैन्यं ननाश तत्।
प्रहर्षं च परं जग्मुः सकला देवतागणाः॥ ४३॥

Transliteration

tato hāhākṛtaṁ sarvaṁ daityasainyaṁ nanāśa tat |
praharṣaṁ ca paraṁ jagmuḥ sakalā devatāgaṇāḥ || 43||

English Translation

43.Then, crying in consternation, the entire army of the Asuras perished; and the entire hosts of gods derived immense delight.

॥ Chapter 003 ॥ Śloka 044 ॥

Sanskrit

तुष्टुवुस्तां सुरा देवीं सहदिव्यैर्महर्षिभिः।
जगुर्गन्धर्वपतयो ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः॥ ४४॥

Transliteration

tuṣṭuvustāṁ surā devīṁ sahadivyairmaharṣibhiḥ |
jagurgandharvapatayo nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ || 44||

English Translation

44.The gods along with the divine seers, lauded the Goddess. The Gandharva kings sang and the hosts of Apsaras danced.

॥ इति श्रीमार्कण्डेयपुराणे सावर्णिके मन्वन्तरे देवीमाहात्म्ये
तृतीयः॥ ३॥

Transliteration

|| iti śrīmārkaṇḍeyapurāṇe sāvarṇike manvantare devīmāhātmye
tṛtīyaḥ || 3||

English Translation

Here ends the third of Devi Māhātmyam in Mārkeṇḍaya Purāṇa during the period of Sāvarni, the Manu.
