॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 001 ॥

ॐ ऋषिरुवाच॥ १॥

English Translation

1.The Sage said:

Sanskrit

निशुम्भं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरं प्राणसम्मितम्।
हन्यमानं बलं चैव शुम्भः क्रुद्धोऽब्रवीद्वचः॥ २॥

Transliteration

niśumbhaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā bhrātaraṁ prāṇasammitam |
hanyamānaṁ balaṁ caiva śumbhaḥ kruddho’bravīdvacaḥ || 2||

English Translation

2.Seeing his brother Niśumbha, who was to him as his own life, killed and his forces being slain Śumbha, furious, spoke these words:

Sanskrit

बलावलेपदुष्टे त्वं मा दुर्गे गर्वमावह।
अन्यासां बलमाश्रित्य युद्ध्यसे चातिमानिनी॥ ३॥

Transliteration

balāvalepaduṣṭe tvaṁ mā durge garvamāvaha |
anyāsāṁ balamāśritya yuddhyase cātimāninī || 3||

English Translation

3.O Durgā, wicked and proud of your strength, do not be haughty. You fight depending on the strength of others and yet you boast of your self-respect!

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 004 ॥

Transliteration

devyuvāca || 4||

English Translation

4.The Goddess said:

एकैवाहं जगत्यत्र द्वितीया का ममापरा।
पश्यैता दुष्ट मय्येव विशन्त्यो मद्विभूतयः॥ ५॥

Transliteration

ekaivāhaṁ jagatyatra dvitīyā kā mamāparā |
paśyaitā duṣṭa mayyeva viśantyo madvibhūtayaḥ || 5||

English Translation

5.In this world, I, the one, alone exist. Who is the second person other than myself ? Look, wicked one, these manifestations of mine enter into myself.

ततः समस्तास्ता देव्यो ब्रह्माणीप्रमुखा लयम्।
तस्या देव्यास्तनौ जग्मुरेकैवासीत्तदाम्बिका॥ ६॥

Transliteration

tataḥ samastāstā devyo brahmāṇīpramukhā layam |
tasyā devyāstanau jagmurekaivāsīttadāmbikā || 6||

English Translation

6.Then all those Devis headed by Brahmāṇī got merged in the body of the Goddess. Then the Mother alone was there.

English Translation

7.The Goddess said:

अहं विभूत्या बहुभिरिह रूपैर्यदास्थिता।
तत्संहृतं मयैकैव तिष्ठाम्याजौ स्थिरो भव॥ ८॥

Transliteration

ahaṁ vibhūtyā bahubhiriha rūpairyadāsthitā |
tatsaṁhṛtaṁ mayaikaiva tiṣṭhāmyājau sthiro bhava || 8||

English Translation

8.I, by manifold manifestations, stood here in many forms. These are now withdrawn by me. Alone I stand. Be steadfast in the battle.

English Translation

9.The Sage said:

ततः प्रववृते युद्धं देव्याः शुम्भस्य चोभयोः।
पश्यतां सर्वदेवानामसुराणां च दारुणम्॥ १०॥

Transliteration

tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ devyāḥ śumbhasya cobhayoḥ |
paśyatāṁ sarvadevānāmasurāṇāṁ ca dāruṇam || 10||

English Translation

10.Then started the battle between them both, the Goddess and Śumbha, striking terror in the witnessing Asuras and all the gods.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 011 ॥

Sanskrit

शरवर्षैः शितैः शस्त्रैस्तथा चास्त्रैः सुदारुणैः।
तयोर्युद्धमभूद्भूयः सर्वलोकभयङ्करम्॥ ११॥

Transliteration

śaravarṣaiḥ śitaiḥ śastraistathā cāstraiḥ sudāruṇaiḥ |
tayoryuddhamabhūdbhūyaḥ sarvalokabhayaṅkaram || 11||

English Translation

11.With showers of arrows, the sharp weapons and with terrific missiles, there arose again a combat between them, fearful to the whole world.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 012 ॥

दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि शतशो मुमुचे यान्यथाम्बिका।
बभञ्ज तानि दैत्येन्द्रस्तत्प्रतीघातकर्तृभिः॥ १२॥

Transliteration

divyānyastrāṇi śataśo mumuce yānyathāmbikā |
babhañja tāni daityendrastatpratīghātakartṛbhiḥ || 12||

English Translation

12.What all divine missiles the Mother discharged in hundreds, the lord of the Asuras broke them all with nullifying weapons.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 013 ॥

मुक्तानि तेन चास्त्राणि दिव्यानि परमेश्वरी।
बभञ्ज लीलयैवोग्रहुङ्कारोच्चारणादिभिः॥ १३॥

Transliteration

muktāni tena cāstrāṇi divyāni parameśvarī |
babhañja līlayaivograhuṅkāroccāraṇādibhiḥ || 13||

English Translation

13.And what all divine missiles were hurled by him, the great Goddess broke them all playfully with fierce grunts and the like.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 014 ॥

ततः शरशतैर्देवीमाच्छादयत सोऽसुरः।
सापि तत्कुपिता देवी धनुश्चिच्छेद चेषुभिः॥ १४॥

Transliteration

tataḥ śaraśatairdevīmācchādayata so’suraḥ |
sāpi tatkupitā devī dhanuściccheda ceṣubhiḥ || 14||

English Translation

14.Then that Asura covered the Goddess with hundreds of arrows. Angry at this, the Goddess too broke his bow with her arrows.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 015 ॥

छिन्ने धनुषि दैत्येन्द्रस्तथा शक्तिमथाददे।
चिच्छेद देवी चक्रेण तामप्यस्य करे स्थिताम्॥ १५॥

Transliteration

chinne dhanuṣi daityendrastathā śaktimathādade |
ciccheda devī cakreṇa tāmapyasya kare sthitām || 15||

English Translation

15.His bow broken, the lord of Asuras got hold of the lance. The Goddess broke that also in his hand, with a discus.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 016 ॥

Sanskrit

ततः खड्गमुपादाय शतचन्द्रं च भानुमत्।
अभ्यधावत तां देवीं दैत्यानामधिपेश्वरः॥ १६॥

Transliteration

tataḥ khaḍgamupādāya śatacandraṁ ca bhānumat |
abhyadhāvata tāṁ devīṁ daityānāmadhipeśvaraḥ || 16||

English Translation

16.Then the supreme sovereign of the Asuras wielding a sword and shield figuring hundred moons, hastened at the Goddess.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 017 ॥

Sanskrit

तस्यापतत एवाशु खड्गं चिच्छेद चण्डिका।
धनुर्मुक्तैः शितैर्बाणैश्चर्म चार्ककरामलम्॥ १७॥।

Transliteration

tasyāpatata evāśu khaḍgaṁ ciccheda caṇḍikā |
dhanurmuktaiḥ śitairbāṇaiścarma cārkakarāmalam || 17||

English Translation

17.As he was rushing forward, Caṇḍikā with sharp arrows released from her bow broke his sword as well as his shield, spotless like the sun’s rays.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 018-019॥

Sanskrit

अश्वांश्च पातयामास रथं सारथिना सह।
हताश्वः स तदा दैत्यश्छिन्नधन्वा विसारथिः॥१८॥
जग्राह मुद्गरं घोरमम्बिकानिधनोद्यतः।
चिच्छेदापततस्तस्य मुद्गरं निशितैः शरैः॥ १९॥

Transliteration

aśvāṁśca pātayāmāsa rathaṁ sārathinā saha |
hatāśvaḥ sa tadā daityaśchinnadhanvā visārathiḥ || 18||
jagrāha mudgaraṁ ghoramambikānidhanodyataḥ |
cicchedāpatatastasya mudgaraṁ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||19||

English Translation

18-19. She felled his horses and the chariot with the charioteer. Then, his horse killed, his bow broken and his charioteer missing, the Asura seized the terrible club, trying to kill the Goddess. She cut into pieces with her sharp arrows his club as he rushed towards her.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 020 ॥

तथापि सोऽभ्यधावत्तां मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगवान्।
स मुष्टिं पातयामास हृदये दैत्यपुङ्गवः॥२०॥

Transliteration

tathāpi so’bhyadhāvattāṁ muṣṭimudyamya vegavān |
sa muṣṭiṁ pātayāmāsa hṛdaye daityapuṅgavaḥ || 20||

English Translation

20.Even then, he leaped at her with speed, lifting his fist. The eminent Asura brought his fist down on the heart of the Goddess.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 021 ॥

Sanskrit

देव्यास्तं चापि सा देवी तलेनोरस्यताडयत् ।
तलप्रहाराभिहतो निपपात महीतले॥ २१॥

Transliteration

devyastaṁ cāpi sā devī talenorasyatāḍayat|
talaprahārābhihato nipapāta mahītale || 21||

English Translation

21.And the Goddess slapped him in the chest with her palm; smitten by the blow of her palm he fell on the ground.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 022 ॥

Sanskrit

स दैत्यराजः सहसा पुनरेव तथोत्थितः।
उत्पत्य च प्रगृह्योच्चैर्देवीं गगनमास्थितः ॥ २२ ॥

Transliteration

sa daityarājaḥ sahasā punareva tathotthitaḥ |
utpatya ca pragṛhyoccairdevīṁ gaganamāsthitaḥ || 22||

English Translation

22.The king of Asuras immediately rose again. He rose up and seizing the Goddess aloft jumped to the sky.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 023 ॥

Sanskrit

तत्रापि सा निराधारा युयुधे तेन चण्डिका॥ २३॥

Transliteration

tatrāpi sā nirādhārā yuyudhe tena caṇḍikā || 23||

English Translation

23.There also Caṇḍikā fought with him without any support.

**

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 024 ॥

Sanskrit

नियुद्धं खे तदा दैत्यश्चण्डिका च परस्परम्।
चक्रतुः प्रथमं सिद्धमुनिविस्मयकारकम्॥ २४॥

Transliteration

niyuddhaṁ khe tadā daityaścaṇḍikā ca parasparam |
cakratuḥ prathamaṁ siddhamunivismayakārakam || 24||

English Translation

24.Then causing wonder to the Siddhas and sages, for the first time, the Asura and Caṇḍikā began to wrestle with each other, in the sky.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 025 ॥

Sanskrit

ततो नियुद्धं सुचिरं कृत्वा तेनाम्बिका सह।
उत्पाट्य भ्रामयामास चिक्षेप धरणीतले॥ २५॥

Transliteration

tato niyuddhaṁ suciraṁ kṛtvā tenāmbikā saha |
utpāṭya bhrāmayāmāsa cikṣepa dharaṇītale || 25||

English Translation

25.Wrestling with him for a long time, the Mother uprooted and swung him round and flung him down on the earth.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 026 ॥

Sanskrit

स क्षिप्तो धरणीं प्राप्य मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगवान्।
अभ्यधावत दुष्टात्मा चण्डिकानिधनेच्छया॥ २६॥

Transliteration

sa kṣipto dharaṇīṁ prāpya muṣṭimudyamya vegavān |
abhyadhāvata duṣṭātmā caṇḍikānidhanecchayā || 26||

English Translation

26.Thus thrown, the wicked Asura reaching the ground jumped up with speed, raising his fist with the desire of slaying Caṇḍikā.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 027 ॥

Sanskrit

तमायान्तं ततो देवी सर्वदैत्यजनेश्वरम्।
जगत्यां पातयामास भित्त्वा शूलेन वक्षसि॥ २७॥

Transliteration

tamāyāntaṁ tato devī sarvadaityajaneśvaram |
jagatyāṁ pātayāmāsa bhittvā śūlena vakṣasi || 27||

English Translation

27.Then the Goddess seeing the lord of all the Asura folk advancing towards her, felled him on the earth, piercing him in the chest with her spear.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 028 ॥

Sanskrit

स गतासुः पपातोर्व्यां देवी शूलाग्रविक्षतः।
चालयन् सकलां पृथ्वीं साब्धिद्वीपां सपर्वताम्॥ २८॥

Transliteration

sa gatāsuḥ papātorvyāṁ devī śūlāgravikṣataḥ |
cālayan sakalāṁ pṛthvīṁ sābdhidvīpāṁ saparvatām || 28||

English Translation

28.Pierced by the spear - point of the Goddess he fell to the ground lifeless, shaking the whole earth along with oceans, islands and mountains.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 029 ॥

Sanskrit

ततः प्रसन्नमखिलं हते तस्मिन् दुरात्मनि।
जगत्स्वास्थ्यमतीवाप निर्मलं चाभवन्नभः॥ २९॥

Transliteration

tataḥ prasannamakhilaṁ hate tasmin durātmani |
jagatsvāsthyamatīvāpa nirmalaṁ cābhavannabhaḥ || 29||

English Translation

29.When that wicked one was slain, everything became clear and propitious. The world got its original state back again and the sky became spotless.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 030 ॥

Sanskrit

उत्पातमेघाः सोल्का ये प्रागासंस्ते शमं ययुः।
सरितो मार्गवाहिन्यस्तथासंस्तत्र पातिते॥ ३०॥

Transliteration

utpātameghāḥ solkā ye prāgāsaṁste śamaṁ yayuḥ |
sarito mārgavāhinyastathāsaṁstatra pātite || 30||

English Translation

30.The portents of clouds with meteors which appeared previously, vanished and the rivers flowed in their courses, after his fall.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 031 ॥

Sanskrit

ततो देवगणाः सर्वे हर्षनिर्भरमानसाः।
बभूवुर्निहते तस्मिन् गन्धर्वा ललितं जगुः॥ ३1॥

Transliteration

tato devagaṇāḥ sarve harṣanirbharamānasāḥ |
babhūvurnihate tasmin gandharvā lalitaṁ jaguḥ || 31||

English Translation

31.As he was killed, all the hosts of gods were filled with delight in their minds and the Gandharvas sang sweetly.

॥ Chapter 010 ॥ Śloka 032 ॥

Sanskrit

अवादयंस्तथैवान्ये ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः।
ववुः पुण्यास्तथा वाताः सुप्रभोऽभूद्दिवाकरः॥ ३२॥

Transliteration

avādayaṁstathaivānye nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ |
vavuḥ puṇyāstathā vātāḥ suprabho’bhūddivākaraḥ || 32||

English Translation

32.Some played on musical instruments and the bevy of Apsara girls danced. The winds blew favorably and the sun became resplendent.

Sanskrit

॥ इति श्रीमार्कण्डेयपुराणे सावर्णिके मन्वन्तरे देवीमाहात्म्ये दशमः॥ १०॥

Transliteration

|| iti śrīmārkaṇḍeyapurāṇe sāvarṇike manvantare devīmāhātmye daśamaḥ || 10||

English Translation

Here ends the tenth of Devi Māhātmya in Mārkaṇḍeyapurāṇa, during the period of Sāvarṇi the Manu.
