English Translation

1.The Sage said:

Sanskrit

देव्या हते तत्र महासुरेन्द्रे
सेन्द्राः सुरा वह्निपुरोगमास्ताम्।
कात्यायनीं तुष्टुवुरिष्टलाभाद्
विकाशिवक्त्राब्जविकाशिताशाः॥ २॥

Transliteration

devyā hate tatra mahāsurendre
sendrāḥ surā vahnipurogamāstām |
kātyāyanīṁ tuṣṭuvuriṣṭalābhād
vikāśivaktrābjavikāśitāśāḥ || 2||

English Translation

2.When the great lord of the Asuras was killed by the Goddess, the gods with Indra, headed by Agni, lauded Kātyāyanī, illustrating the quarters with their moon - like faces, cheerful on account of the fulfillment of their desire:

देवी प्रपन्नार्तिहरे प्रसीद
प्रसीद मातर्जगतोऽखिलस्य।
प्रसीद विश्वेश्वरि पाहि विश्वं
त्वमीश्वरी देवि चराचरस्य॥ ३॥

Transliteration

devī prapannārtihare prasīda
prasīda mātarjagato’khilasya |
prasīda viśveśvari pāhi viśvaṁ
tvamīśvarī devi carācarasya || 3||

English Translation

3.O Devī, O Remover of the distress of those who take refuge in thee, Be pleased. May thou be gracious, O Mother of the entire world. Be pleased, o Sovereign of the Universe, protect the universe. O Devi, thou art the sovereign of the mobile and the immobile.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 004 ॥

Sanskrit

आधारभूता जगतस्त्वमेका
महीस्वरूपेण यतः स्थितासि।
अपां स्वरूपस्थितया त्वयैत-
दाप्यायते कृत्स्नमलङ्घ्यवीर्ये॥ ४॥

Transliteration

ādhārabhūtā jagatastvamekā
mahīsvarūpeṇa yataḥ sthitāsi |
apāṁ svarūpasthitayā tvayaita-
dāpyāyate kṛtsnamalaṅghyavīrye || 4||

English Translation

4.Thou alone art the sole support and basis of the world; because thou standest in the form of the vast earth. O, Thou whose valour cannot be challenged, the thirst of all this is quenched by thee who standest in the form of water.1


1. All this life is athirst for delight, the rasa, the divine waters āpo devīḥ that create and sustain existence.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 005 ॥

त्वं वैष्णवीशक्तिरनन्तवीर्या
विश्वस्य बीजं परमासि माया।
सम्मोहितं देवि समस्तमेतत्
त्वं वै प्रसन्ना भुवि मुक्तिहेतुः॥ ५॥

Transliteration

tvaṁ vaiṣṇavīśaktiranantavīryā
viśvasya bījaṁ paramāsi māyā |
sammohitaṁ devi samastametat
tvaṁ vai prasannā bhuvi muktihetuḥ || 5||

English Translation

5.Viṣṇu’s Śakti thou art, of infinite valour. The seed of the universe, thou art the supreme Māyā: O Devī, all this is charmed and deluded by thee. If thou art gracious,1 thou becomest the cause of liberation on the earth itself.


1. The Sanskrit word is prasanna, clear. Devi is the supreme delusion. The delusion persists till the gracious Presence becomes clear prasanna, then one receives the grace, prasāda, of the Devi. She that is delusion becomes the cause of liberation as well.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 006 ॥

Sanskrit

विद्याः समस्तास्तव देवि भेदाः
स्त्रियः समस्ताः सकला जगत्सु।
त्वयैकया पूरितमम्बयैतत्
का ते स्तुतिः स्तव्यपरापरोक्तिः॥ ६॥

Transliteration

vidyāḥ samastāstava devi bhedāḥ
striyaḥ samastāḥ sakalā jagatsu |
tvayaikayā pūritamambayaitat
kā te stutiḥ stavyaparāparoktiḥ || 6||

English Translation

6.O Devī, in the world, all ways of knowledge are thy different parts and all women are in thee in entirety. This world is filled by thee, the Sole Mother. Thou art the supreme fit to be lauded. Thou art also the supreme laud. So, what laud can we make?

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 007 ॥

Sanskrit

सर्वभूता यदा देवी भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदायिनी।
त्वं स्तुता स्तुतये का वा भवन्तु परमोक्तयः॥ ७॥

Transliteration

sarvabhūtā yadā devī bhuktimuktipradāyinī |
tvaṁ stutā stutaye kā vā bhavantu paramoktayaḥ || 7||

English Translation

7.The Goddess has become all; she gives enjoyment and liberation – when thou art lauded thus, what more potent words can be for thy praise?

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 008 ॥

Sanskrit

सर्वस्य बुद्धिरूपेण जनस्य हृदि संस्थिते।
स्वर्गापवर्गदे देवि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ ८॥

Transliteration

sarvasya buddhirūpeṇa janasya hṛdi saṁsthite |
svargāpavargade devi nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 8||

English Translation

8.O thou who standest in the form of intelligence in the heart of every person, giver of heaven and liberation, Devi, Nārāyaṇi, salutation be to thee.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 009 ॥

Sanskrit

कलाकाष्ठादिरूपेण परिणामप्रदायिनि।
विश्वस्योपरतौ शक्ते नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ ९॥

Transliteration

kalākāṣṭhādirūpeṇa pariṇāmapradāyini |
viśvasyoparatau śakte nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 9||

English Translation

9.O thou who grantest the evolution in the form of Kalā Kāsṭhā,1 the force left even after the cessation of the universe, Nārāyaṇi, salutations be to thee.


1 Measurements of time. Eighteen minutes make one kāṣṭhā and thirty kāṣṭhā make one Kalā.

सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके।
शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ १०॥

Transliteration

sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalye śive sarvārthasādhike |
śaraṇye tryambake gauri nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 10||

English Translation

10.O the auspiciousness in all that is auspicious, O the good, the accomplisher of all objects, O adept in giving refuge, the mother of the triple world, lady immaculate (Gaui) Nārāyaṇi salutation be to thee.

Sanskrit

सृष्टिस्थितिविनाशानां शक्तिभूते सनातनि।
गुणाश्रये गुणमये नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ ११॥

Transliteration

sṛṣṭisthitivināśānāṁ śaktibhūte sanātani |
guṇāśraye guṇamaye nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 11||

English Translation

11.O thou who becomest the force behind creation, preservation and destruction, O Eternal one, O resort to the guṇas (Puruṣa) O the make-up of guṇas (Prakṛti), Nārāyaṇi, salutation be to thee.

शरणागतदीनार्तपरित्राणपरायणे।
सर्वस्यार्तिहरे देवि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ १२॥

Transliteration

śaraṇāgatadīnārtaparitrāṇaparāyaṇe |
sarvasyārtihare devi nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 12||

English Translation

12.O thou, resolved to protect the weak and the distressed who take refuge in thee, O the remover of sufferings of every being, Devi Nārāyaṇi, salutation be to thee.

हंसयुक्तविमानस्थे ब्रह्माणीरूपधारिणि।
कौशाम्भःक्षरिके देवि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ १३॥

Transliteration

haṁsayuktavimānasthe brahmāṇīrūpadhāriṇi |
kauśāmbhaḥkṣarike devi nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 13||

English Translation

13.O Nārāyaṇi, seated in the chariot yoked to swans, bearing the form of Brahmāṇī and sprinkling the waters with kuśa grass Devi, salutation be to thee.

Sanskrit

त्रिशूलचन्द्राहिधरे महावृषभवाहिनि।
माहेश्वरीस्वरूपेण नारायणि नमोऽस्तुते॥ १४॥

Transliteration

triśūlacandrāhidhare mahāvṛṣabhavāhini |
māheśvarīsvarūpeṇa nārāyaṇi namo’stute || 14||

English Translation

14.O Nārāyaṇi, in the form of Māheśvarī, Wearer of the trident, moon and the snake, mounted on the great bull, salutation be to thee.

Sanskrit

मयूरकुक्कुटवृते महाशक्तिधरेऽनघे।
कौमारीरूपसंस्थाने नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ १५॥

Transliteration

mayūrakukkuṭavṛte mahāśaktidhare’naghe |
kaumārīrūpasaṁsthāne nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 15||

English Translation

15.O Nārāyaṇi, appearing in the form of Kaumārī, O wielder of the great lance, O Pure one, surrounded by the cock and the peacock, salutation be to thee.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 016 ॥

Sanskrit

शङ्खचक्रगदाशार्ङ्गगृहीतपरमायुधे।
प्रसीद वैष्णवीरूपे नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ १६॥

Transliteration

śaṅkhacakragadāśārṅgagṛhītaparamāyudhe |
prasīda vaiṣṇavīrūpe nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 16||

English Translation

16.O Nārāyaṇi, in the form of Vārāyaṇī, be gracious. O wielder of the superb weapons, conch, discus, mace and the bow Śārṅga, salutation be to thee.

Sanskrit

गृहीतोग्रमहाचक्रे दंष्ट्रोद्धृतवसुन्धरे।
वराहरूपिणि शिवे नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ १७॥

Transliteration

gṛhītogramahācakre daṁṣṭroddhṛtavasundhare |
varāharūpiṇi śive nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 17||

English Translation

17.O Nārāyaṇi, in the form of the great boar: O thou who lifted up the earth with thy tusk, wielder of the great fierce wheel, O Auspicious, salutations be to thee.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 018 ॥

Sanskrit

नृसिंहरूपेणोग्रेण हन्तुं दैत्यान् कृतोद्यमे।
त्रैलोक्यत्राणसहिते नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ १८॥

Transliteration

nṛsiṁharūpeṇogreṇa hantuṁ daityān kṛtodyame |
trailokyatrāṇasahite nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 18||

English Translation

18.O Nārāyaṇi, who in the terrible form of Narasiṁha is engaged in killing the Asuras and affording constant protection to the three worlds, salutations be to thee.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 019 ॥

Sanskrit

किरीटिनि महावज्रे सहस्रनयनोज्ज्वले।
वृत्रप्राणहरे चैन्द्रि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ १९॥

Transliteration

kirīṭini mahāvajre sahasranayanojjvale |
vṛtraprāṇahare caindri nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 19||

English Translation

19.O Nārāyaṇi, Indra’s force. O thou with the crown, the great thunderbolt and the thousand eyes resplendent, Vṛtra’s life-taker, salutations be to thee.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 020 ॥

Sanskrit

शिवदूतीस्वरूपेण हतदैत्यमहाबले।
घोररूपे महारावे नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ २०॥

Transliteration

śivadūtīsvarūpeṇa hatadaityamahābale |
ghorarūpe mahārāve nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 20||

English Translation

20.O Nārāyaṇi, in the form of Śivadūtī, O the vanquisher of the great armies of the Asuras, O of terrible form and tremendous noise, salutation be to thee.

Sanskrit

दंष्ट्राकरालवदने शिरोमालाविभूषणे।
चामुण्डे मुण्डमथने नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ २१॥

Transliteration

daṁṣṭrākarālavadane śiromālāvibhūṣaṇe |
cāmuṇḍe muṇḍamathane nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 21||

English Translatio

21.O Nārāyaṇi, O Cāmuṇḍā, the smasher of Muṇḍa, O thou with the garland of heads as ornament, O thou of terrific teeth and mouth, salutation be to thee.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 022 ॥

Sanskrit

लक्ष्मि लज्जे महाविद्ये श्रद्धे पुष्टि स्वधे ध्रुवे।
महारात्रि महामाये नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ २२॥

Transliteration

lakṣmi lajje mahāvidye śraddhe puṣṭi svadhe dhruve |
mahārātri mahāmāye nārāyaṇi namo’stu te || 22||

English Translation

22.O Nārāyaṇi, O prosperity, modesty, great knowledge, faith, nourishment, self - sustenance, constancy, O the great night, O the great del on, salutation be to thee.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 023 ॥

Sanskrit

मेधे सरस्वति वरे भूति बाभ्रवि तामसि।
नियते त्वं प्रसीदेशे नारायणि नमोऽस्तुते॥ २३॥

Transliteration

medhe sarasvati vare bhūti bābhravi tāmasi |
niyate tvaṁ prasīdeśe nārāyaṇi namo’stute || 23||

English Translation

23.O Nārāyaṇi, O the intellect united with God, all-flowing knowledge, O the best, O the white Satva, the tawny Rajas, the dark Tamas, O the fixed principle beyond the triad of guṇas, O Sovereign,1 be pleased, salutation be to thee.


1. She is guṇamayī, also guṇātīta. She is in the from of three gunas, the fixed principle niyati beyond the three guṇas and the master soverign Īśa.

Sanskrit

सर्वस्वरूपे सर्वेशे सर्वशक्तिसमन्विते।
भयेभ्यस्त्राहि नो देवि दुर्गे देवि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ २४॥

Transliteration

sarvasvarūpe sarveśe sarvaśaktisamanvite |
bhayebhyastrāhi no devi durge devi namo’stu te || 24||

English Translation

24.O the form of all, the master of all, O thou accompanied by all the forces, Devi protect us from fear. O Devi Durgā, salutation be to thee.

Sanskrit

एतत्ते वदनं सौम्यं लोचनत्रयभूषितम्।
पातु नः सर्वभूतेभ्यः कात्यायनि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ २५॥

Transliteration

etatte vadanaṁ saumyaṁ locanatrayabhūṣitam |
pātu naḥ sarvabhūtebhyaḥ kātyāyani namo’stu te || 25||

English Translation

25.May this thy lovely face adorned with eyes, guard us from all beings. O Kātyāyani, salutation be to thee.

Sanskrit

ज्वालाकरालमत्युग्रमशेषासुरसूदनम्।
त्रिशूलं पातु नो भीतेर्भद्रकालि नमोऽस्तु ते॥ २६॥

Transliteration

jvālākarālamatyugramaśeṣāsurasūdanam |
triśūlaṁ pātu no bhīterbhadrakāli namo’stu te || 26||

English Translation

26.May the trident sharp - edged, flaming terribly, destroyer of the Asuras in entirety, protect us from terror O Auspicious Kāli, salutation be to thee.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 027 ॥

Sanskrit

हिनस्ति दैत्यतेजांसि स्वनेनापूर्य या जगत्।
सा घण्टा पातु नो देवि पापेभ्यो नः सुतानिव॥ २७॥

Transliteration

hinasti daityatejāṁsi svanenāpūrya yā jagat |
sā ghaṇṭā pātu no devi pāpebhyo naḥ sutāniva || 27||

English Translation

27.O Devi, May that bell which filling the world with its sound destroys the prowess of the Asuras protect us from evil, as a living being protects its children.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 028 ॥

Sanskrit

असुरासृग्वसापङ्कचर्चितस्ते करोज्ज्वलः।
शुभाय खड्गो भवतु चण्डिके त्वां नता वयम्॥ २८॥

Transliteration

asurāsṛgvasāpaṅkacarcitaste karojjvalaḥ |
śubhāya khaḍgo bhavatu caṇḍike tvāṁ natā vayam || 28||

English Translation

28.O Caṇḍikā, may thy sword smeared with the mire of blood and marrow of the Asuras, resplendent in thy hand be for our good. We bow down to thee.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 029 ॥

Sanskrit

रोगानशेषानपहंसि तुष्टा

रुष्टा तु कामान् सकलानभीष्टान्।
त्वामाश्रितानां न विपन्नराणां
त्वामाश्रिता ह्याश्रयतां प्रयान्ति॥ २९॥

Transliteration

rogānaśeṣānapahaṁsi tuṣṭā
ruṣṭā tu kāmān sakalānabhīṣṭān |
tvāmāśritānāṁ na vipannarāṇāṁ
tvāmāśritā hyāśrayatāṁ prayānti || 29||

English Translation

29.If pleased thou destroyest all diseases; if angry thou destroyest all the desires longed for. No calamity befalls the men who depend on thee. Those who depend on thee and resort to thee become a haven of refuge.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 030 ॥

Sanskrit

एतत्कृतं यत्कदनं त्वयाद्य

धर्मद्विषां देवि महासुराणाम्।
रूपैरनेकैर्बहुधात्ममूर्तिं
कृत्वाम्बिके तत्प्रकरोति काऽन्या॥ ३०॥

Transliteration

etatkṛtaṁ yatkadanaṁ tvayādya

dharmadviṣāṁ devi mahāsurāṇām |
rūpairanekairbahudhātmamūrtiṁ
kṛtvāmbike tatprakaroti kā’nyā || 30||

English Translation

30.Who else can do this, this slaughter that has been done by thee now, of the great Asuras, the haters of Dharma, by making thy form manifold, into very many forms.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 031 ॥

Sanskrit

विद्यासु शास्त्रेषु विवेकदीपे-

ष्वाद्येषु वाक्येषु च का त्वदन्या।
ममत्वगर्तेऽतिमहान्धकारे
विभ्रामयत्येतदतीव विश्वम्॥ ३१॥

Transliteration

vidyāsu śāstreṣu vivekadīpe-
ṣvādyeṣu vākyeṣu ca kā tvadanyā |
mamatvagarte’timahāndhakāre
vibhrāmayatyetadatīva viśvam || 31||

English Translation

31.Who else except thee is said in the paths of knowledge, in the sciences, in those original statements, the lamps of discrimination? Yet, in the blindest darkest abyss of my - ness, thou throwest this universe and makest it whirl.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 032 ॥

Sanskrit

रक्षांसि यत्रोग्रविषाश्च नागा

यत्रारयो दस्युबलानि यत्र।
दावानलो यत्र तथाब्धिमध्ये

तत्र स्थिता त्वं परिपासि विश्वम्॥ ३२॥

Transliteration

rakṣāṁsi yatrograviṣāśca nāgā

yatrārayo dasyubalāni yatra |
dāvānalo yatra tathābdhimadhye
tatra sthitā tvaṁ paripāsi viśvam || 32||

English Translation

32.Where there are demons, serpents with dreadful poison, where there are foes, troops of robbers, where there is wild fire, in the midst of the sea, there thou standest and savest the universe.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 033 ॥

Sanskrit

विश्वेश्वरि त्वं परिपासि विश्वं
विश्वात्मिका धारयसीह विश्वम्।
विश्वेशवन्द्या भवती भवन्ति
विश्वाश्रया ये त्वयि भक्तिनम्राः॥ ३३॥

Transliteration

viśveśvari tvaṁ paripāsi viśvaṁ

viśvātmikā dhārayasīha viśvam |
viśveśavandyā bhavatī bhavanti
viśvāśrayā ye tvayi bhaktinamrāḥ || 33||

English Translation

33.Thou art the sovereign of the universe. Thou protectest the universe. The soul of the universe, thou upholdest and sustainest here the universe. Thou art worthy to be adored even by the lord of the universe. The whole universe takes refuge in those who bow to thee in devotion.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 034 ॥

Sanskrit

देवि प्रसीद परिपालय नोऽरिभीते-
र्नित्यं यथासुरवधादधुनैव सद्यः।
पापानि सर्वजगतां प्रशमं नयाशु
उत्पातपाकजनितांश्च महोपसर्गान्॥ ३४॥

Transliteration

devi prasīda paripālaya no’ribhīte-
rnityaṁ yathāsuravadhādadhunaiva sadyaḥ |
pāpāni sarvajagatāṁ praśamaṁ nayāśu
utpātapākajanitāṁśca mahopasargān || 34||

English Translation

34.O Devi, be gracious Just as thou hast now immediately saved us by killing the Asuras, likewise, always save us from the fear of the foe. Please subdue the sins of all the worlds and the great calamities that are produced by the maturing of evil portents.

Sanskrit

प्रणतानां प्रसीद त्वं देवि विश्वार्तिहारिणि।
त्रैलोक्यवासिनामीड्ये लोकानां वरदा भव॥ ३५॥

Transliteration

praṇatānāṁ prasīda tvaṁ devi viśvārtihāriṇi |
trailokyavāsināmīḍye lokānāṁ varadā bhava || 35||

English Translation

35.Be gracious to those who bow to thee. O Devi, Destroyer of the distress of the universe, O thou worthy of praise by the inhabitants of the three worlds, grant what is best to all the worlds.

English Translation

36.The Goddess said

वरदाहं सुरगणा वरं यन्मनसेच्छथ।
तं वृणुध्वं प्रयच्छामि जगतामुपकारकम्॥ ३७॥

Transliteration

varadāhaṁ suragaṇā varaṁ yanmanasecchatha |
taṁ vṛṇudhvaṁ prayacchāmi jagatāmupakārakam || 37||

English Translation

37.O host of gods, I shall grant the boon. Whatever boon you desire by the mind, choose that: I shall give for the benefit of the world.

सर्वाबाधाप्रशमनं त्रैलोक्यस्याखिलेश्वरि।
एवमेव त्वया कार्यमस्मद्वैरिविनाशनम्॥ ३९॥

Transliteration

sarvābādhāpraśamanaṁ trailokyasyākhileśvari |
evameva tvayā kāryamasmadvairivināśanam || 39||

English Translation

39.O Sovereign of all, just like this, thou shouldst accomplish the destruction of our foes, the appeasement of all the afflictions of the three worlds.

वैवस्वतेऽन्तरे प्राप्ते अष्टाविंशतिमे युगे।
शुम्भो निशुम्भश्चैवान्यावुत्पत्स्येते महासुरौ॥ ४१॥

Transliteration

vaivasvate’ntare prāpte aṣṭāviṁśatime yuge |
śumbho niśumbhaścaivānyāvutpatsyete mahāsurau || 41||

English Translation

41.In the time of Vaivasvata Manu, when the twenty eighth yuga comes, two other great Asuras Śumbha and Niśumbha will be born.

Sanskrit

नन्दगोपगृहे जाता यशोदागर्भसम्भवा।
ततस्तौ नाशयिष्यामि विन्ध्याचलनिवासिनी॥ ४२॥

Transliteration

nandagopagṛhe jātā yaśodāgarbhasambhavā |
tatastau nāśayiṣyāmi vindhyācalanivāsinī || 42||

English Translation

42.Born in the womb of Yaśoda, growing in the house of Nandagopa I shall then destroy them, taking abode in the Vindhya mountain.

पुनरप्यतिरौद्रेण रूपेण पृथिवीतले।
अवतीर्य हनिष्यामि वैप्रचित्तांश्च दानवान्॥ ४३॥

Transliteration

punarapyatiraudreṇa rūpeṇa pṛthivītale |
avatīrya haniṣyāmi vaipracittāṁśca dānavān || 43||

English Translation

43.Again, I shall descend on earth in the most terrible form and shall slay the Asuras Vaipra chittas.

भक्षयन्त्याश्च तानुग्रान् वैप्रचित्तान् महासुरान्।
रक्ता दन्ता भविष्यन्ति दाडिमीकुसुमोपमाः॥ ४४॥

Transliteration

bhakṣayantyāśca tānugrān vaipracittān mahāsurān |
raktā dantā bhaviṣyanti dāḍimīkusumopamāḥ || 44||

English Translation

44.When I eat up those great Asuras, Vaipra chittas, my teeth will become as red as the pomegranate flower.

ततो मां देवताः स्वर्गे मर्त्यलोके च मानवाः।
स्तुवन्तो व्याहरिष्यन्ति सततं रक्तदन्तिकाम्॥ ४५॥

Transliteration

tato māṁ devatāḥ svarge martyaloke ca mānavāḥ |
stuvanto vyāhariṣyanti satataṁ raktadantikām || 45||

English Translation

45.Then the gods in heaven and the men in the mortal world when praising shall always speak of me as Raktadantikā.

भूयश्च शतवार्षिक्यामनावृष्ट्यामनम्भसि।
मुनिभिः संस्मृता भूमौ सम्भविष्याम्ययोनिजा॥ ४६॥

Transliteration

bhūyaśca śatavārṣikyāmanāvṛṣṭyāmanambhasi |
munibhiḥ saṁsmṛtā bhūmau sambhaviṣyāmyayonijā || 46||

English Translation

46.Again, when for hundred years there will be no water on account of rains, praised by the sages I shall come into being on earth, without being born in a womb.

ततः शतेन नेत्राणां निरीक्षिष्याम्यहं मुनीन्।
कीर्तयिष्यन्ति मनुजाः शताक्षीमिति मां ततः॥ ४७॥

Transliteration

tataḥ śatena netrāṇāṁ nirīkṣiṣyāmyahaṁ munīn |
kīrtayiṣyanti manujāḥ śatākṣīmiti māṁ tataḥ || 47||

English Translation

47.Then I shall look at the sages with a hundred eyes. Then the offsprings of Manu shall extol me as Satākṣī.

Sanskrit

ततोऽहमखिलं लोकमात्मदेहसमुद्भवैः।
भरिष्यामि सुराः शाकैरावृष्टेः प्राणधारकैः॥ ४८॥

Transliteration

tato’hamakhilaṁ lokamātmadehasamudbhavaiḥ |
bhariṣyāmi surāḥ śākairāvṛṣṭeḥ prāṇadhārakaiḥ || 48||

English Translation

48.O gods, then till the rains come, I shall fill and nourish the entire world with life-sustaining vegetables produced out of my own body.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 049 ॥

शाकम्भरीति विख्यातिं तदा यास्याम्यहं भुवि॥ ४९॥

Transliteration

śākambharīti vikhyātiṁ tadā yāsyāmyahaṁ bhuvi || 49||

English Translation

49.Then I shall get renown in the world as Śākambharī.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 050 ॥

तत्रैव च वधिष्यामि दुर्गमाख्यं महासुरम्।
दुर्गादेवीति विख्यातं तन्मे नाम भविष्यति॥ ५०॥

Transliteration

tatraiva ca vadhiṣyāmi durgamākhyaṁ mahāsuram |
durgādevīti vikhyātaṁ tanme nāma bhaviṣyati || 50||

English Translation

50.There itself I shall slay a great Asura named Durgama. Then I shall get the famous name of Goddess Durgā.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 051-052 ॥

पुनश्चाहं यदा भीमं रूपं कृत्वा हिमाचले ।
रक्षांसि भक्षयिष्यामि मुनीनां त्राणकारणात्॥५१ ॥
तदा मां मुनयः सर्वे स्तोष्यन्त्यानम्रमूर्तयः।
भीमादेवीति विख्यातं तन्मे नाम भविष्यति ॥५२ ॥

Transliteration

punaścāhaṁ yadā bhīmaṁ rūpaṁ kṛtvā himācale |
rakṣāṁsi bhakṣayiṣyāmi munīnāṁ trāṇakāraṇāt ||51 ||
tadā māṁ munayaḥ sarve stoṣyantyānamramūrtayaḥ |
bhīmādevīti vikhyātaṁ tanme nāma bhaviṣyati ||52||

English Translation

51-52. Again, when for the sake of protecting the sages, I shall take a terrific form in the mountain Himalayas and devour the demons, then all the sages with their bodies bent in salutation will be extolling me. Then my name will become famous as Goddess Bhīmā.

यदाऽरुणाख्यस्त्रैलोक्ये महाबाधां करिष्यति ।
तदाऽहं भ्रामरं रूपं कृत्वाऽसङ्ख्येयषट्पदम्॥ ५३॥
त्रैलोक्यस्य हितार्थाय वधिष्यामि महासुरम्।
भ्रामरीति च मां लोकास्तदा स्तोष्यन्ति सर्वतः ॥ ५४॥

Transliteration

yadā’ruṇākhyastrailokye mahābādhāṁ kariṣyati |
tadā’haṁ bhrāmaraṁ rūpaṁ kṛtvāsaṅkhyeyaṣaṭpadam || 53||
trailokyasya hitārthāya vadhiṣyāmi mahāsuram|
bhrāmarīti ca māṁ lokāstadā stoṣyanti sarvataḥ || 54||

English Translation

53-54. When in the three worlds one Aruna will be creating great havoc, I shall take the form of a cluster consisting of innumerable bees and shall slay the great Asura for the benefit of the three worlds. Then everywhere people will laud me as a Bhrāmarī.

॥ Chapter 011 ॥ Śloka 055 ॥

इत्थं यदा यदा बाधा दानवोत्था भविष्यति ।
तदा तदावतीर्याहं करिष्याम्यरिसङ्क्षयम्॥ ५५॥

Transliteration

itthaṁ yadā yadā bādhā dānavotthā bhaviṣyati |
tadā tadāvatīryāhaṁ kariṣyāmyarisaṅkṣayam || 55||

English Translation

55.Thus, whenever there shall be oppression arising out of the Asuras, I shall descend and accomplish the destruction of the foes,

॥ इति श्रीमार्कण्डेयपुराणे सावर्णिके मन्वन्तरे देवीमाहात्म्ये एकादशः॥ ११॥

Transliteration

|| iti śrīmārkaṇḍeyapurāṇe sāvarṇike manvantare devīmāhātmye ekādaśaḥ || 11||

English Translation

Here ends the eleventh of Devī Māhātmya in Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa during the period of Sāvarṇi, the Manu
