1.The Sage said:

इत्याकर्ण्य वचो देव्याः स दूतोऽमर्षपूरितः।
समाचष्ट समागम्य दैत्यराजाय विस्तरात्॥ २॥
Transliteration
ityākarṇya vaco devyāḥ sa dūto’marṣapūritaḥ |
samācaṣṭa samāgamya daityarājāya vistarāt || 2||
English Translation
2.Hearing the words of the Goddess thus, the messenger, full of impatience, went to the king of Asuras and told him in detail.

॥ Chapter 006 ॥ Śloka 003 ॥

तस्य दूतस्य तद्वाक्यमाकर्ण्यासुरराट् ततः।
सक्रोधः प्राह दैत्यानामधिपं धूम्रलोचनम्॥ ३॥
Transliteration
tasya dūtasya tadvākyamākarṇyāsurarāṭ tataḥ |
sakrodhaḥ prāha daityānāmadhipaṁ dhūmralocanam || 3||
English Translation
3.Then, hearing those words of that messenger, the Asura monarch, with anger, told Dhūmralocana, a chieftain of the Asuras.

॥ Chapter 006 ॥ Śloka 004 ॥

हे धूम्रलोचनाशु त्वं स्वसैन्यपरिवारितः।
तामानय बलाद्दुष्टां केशाकर्षणविह्वलाम्॥ ४॥
Transliteration
he dhūmralocanāśu tvaṁ svasainyaparivāritaḥ |
tāmānaya balādduṣṭāṁ keśākarṣaṇavihvalām || 4||
English Translation
4.O Dhūmralocana, surrounded by your army, you speed up and bring by force that wicked one here unnerving her by dragging her by the hair.

॥ Chapter 006 ॥ Śloka 005 ॥

तत्परित्राणदः कश्चिद्यदि वोत्तिष्ठते परः।
स हन्तव्योऽमरो वापि यक्षो गन्धर्व एव वा॥ ५॥
Transliteration
tatparitrāṇadaḥ kaścidyadi vottiṣṭhate paraḥ |
sa hantavyo’maro vāpi yakṣo gandharva eva vā || 5||
English Translation
5.If any one else stands up to give her protection, he should be slain, be he a god, Yakṣa or Gandharva.

6.The Sage said:

तेनाज्ञप्तस्ततः शीघ्रं स दैत्यो धूम्रलोचनः।
वृतः षष्ट्या सहस्राणामसुराणां द्रुतं ययौ॥ ७॥
Transliteration
tenājñaptastataḥ śīghraṁ sa daityo dhūmralocanaḥ |
vṛtaḥ ṣaṣṭyā sahasrāṇāmasurāṇāṁ drutaṁ yayau || 7||
English Translation
7.Then ordered by him quickly, the Asura Dhūmralocana marched past surrounded by sixty thousand Asuras.

स दृष्ट्वा तां ततो देवीं तुहिनाचलसंस्थिताम्।
जगादोच्चैः प्रयाहीति मूलं शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः॥ ८॥
Transliteration
sa dṛṣṭvā tāṁ tato devīṁ tuhinācalasaṁsthitām |
jagādoccaiḥ prayāhīti mūlaṁ śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ || 8||
English Translation
8.On seeing the Goddess seated on the snowy mountain he shouted: “Set out to the presence of Śumbha and Niśumbha.

॥ Chapter 006 ॥ Śloka 009 ॥

न चेत्प्रीत्याद्य भवती मद्भर्तारमुपैष्यति।
ततो बलान्नयाम्येष केशाकर्षणविह्वलाम्॥ ९॥
Transliteration
na cetprītyādya bhavatī madbhartāramupaiṣyati |
tato balānnayāmyeṣa keśākarṣaṇavihvalām || 9||
English Translation
9.If you do not go to my master now with love, I shall take you by force, unnerving you by dragging you by the hair.”

10.The Goddess said:

दैत्येश्वरेण प्रहितो बलवान्बलसंवृतः।
बलान्नयसि मामेवं ततः किं ते करोम्यहम्॥ ११॥
Transliteration
daityeśvareṇa prahito balavānbalasaṁvṛtaḥ |
balānnayasi māmevaṁ tataḥ kiṁ te karomyaham || 11||
English Translation
11.You are sent by the lord of the Asuras. You are strong, are surrounded by an army. If you thus take me by force, what can I do to you?

12.The Sage said:

हुङ्कारेणैव तं भस्म सा चकाराम्बिका तदा॥ १३॥
Transliteration
ityuktaḥ so’bhyadhāvattāmasuro dhūmralocanaḥ |
huṅkāreṇaiva taṁ bhasma sā cakārāmbikā tadā || 13||
English Translation
13.Spoken to thus, the Asura Dhūmralocana rushed towards her. The mother reduced him to ashes by a mere grunt (Huṅkāra)

अथ क्रुद्धं महासैन्यमसुराणां तथाम्बिका।
ववर्ष सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैस्तथा शक्तिपरश्वधैः॥ १४॥
Transliteration
atha kruddhaṁ mahāsainyamasurāṇāṁ tathāmbikā |
vavarṣa sāyakaistīkṣṇaistathā śaktiparaśvadhaiḥ || 14||
English Translation
14.Then the great army of the Asuras enraged showered on the mother sharp arrows, lances and hatchets.

ततो धुतसटः कोपात्कृत्वा नादं सुभैरवम्।
पपातासुरसेनायां सिंहो देव्याः स्ववाहनः॥ १५॥
Transliteration
tato dhutasaṭaḥ kopātkṛtvā nādaṁ subhairavam |
papātāsurasenāyāṁ siṁho devyāḥ svavāhanaḥ || 15||
English Translation
15.Then the lion, the mount of the Goddess, shook its manes in anger, made a terrible noise and fell on the army of the Asuras.

॥ Chapter 006 ॥ Śloka 016 ॥

कांश्चित्करप्रहारेण दैत्यानास्येन चापरान्।
आक्रान्त्या चाधरेणान्यान् जघान स महासुरान्॥ १६॥
Transliteration
kāṁścitkaraprahāreṇa daityānāsyena cāparān |
ākrāntyā cādhareṇānyān jaghāna sa mahāsurān || 16||
English Translation
16.Some Asuras with a blow of its paw, others with its mouth and some others with a stampede of its hind legs, it slaughtered.

केषाञ्चित्पाटयामास नखैः कोष्ठानि केसरी।
तथा तलप्रहारेण शिरांसि कृतवान्पृथक्॥ १७॥
Transliteration
keṣāñcitpāṭayāmāsa nakhaiḥ koṣṭhāni kesarī |
tathā talaprahāreṇa śirāṁsi kṛtavānpṛthak || 17||
English Translation
17.The lion tore with its claws the bellies of some Asuras and striking with its paw it severed their heads

॥ Chapter 006 ॥ Śloka 018 ॥

विच्छिन्नबाहुशिरसः कृतास्तेन तथापरे।
पपौ च रुधिरं कोष्ठादन्येषां धुतकेसरः॥ १८॥
Transliteration
vicchinnabāhuśirasaḥ kṛtāstena tathāpare |
papau ca rudhiraṁ koṣṭhādanyeṣāṁ dhutakesaraḥ || 18||
English Translation
18.It cut asunder the arms and heads of others; and shaking its mane, it drank the blood from the bellies of some others.

॥ Chapter 006 ॥ Śloka 019 ॥

क्षणेन तद्बलं सर्वं क्षयं नीतं महात्मना।
तेन केसरिणा देव्या वाहनेनातिकोपिना॥ १९॥
Transliteration
kṣaṇena tadbalaṁ sarvaṁ kṣayaṁ nītaṁ mahātmanā |
tena kesariṇā devyā vāhanenātikopinā || 19||
English Translation
19.In a moment, the entire army was destroyed by that enraged lion, the noble vehicle of the Goddess.

॥ Chapter 006 ॥ Śloka 020-021 ॥

श्रुत्वा तमसुरं देव्या निहतं धूम्रलोचनम्।
बलं च क्षयितं कृत्स्नं देवीकेसरिणा ततः॥ २०॥
चुकोप दैत्याधिपतिः शुम्भः प्रस्फुरिताधरः।
आज्ञापयामास च तौ चण्डमुण्डौ महासुरौ॥ २१॥
Transliteration
śrutvā tamasuraṁ devyā nihataṁ dhūmralocanam |
balaṁ ca kṣayitaṁ kṛtsnaṁ devīkesariṇā tataḥ || 20||
cukopa daityādhipatiḥ śumbhaḥ prasphuritādharaḥ |
ājñāpayāmāsa ca tau caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāsurau || 21||
English Translation
20-21. Hearing that the Asura Dhūmralochana was slain by the Goddess and the entire army was destroyed by the lion of the Goddess, Śumbha, the lord of the Asuras, became furious. With his lips quivering, he ordered the great Asuras, Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa.

॥ Chapter 006 ॥ Śloka 022-023 ॥

हे चण्ड हे मुण्ड बलैर्बहुभिः परिवारितौ।
तत्र गच्छत गत्वा च सा समानीयतां लघु॥ २२॥
केशेष्वाकृष्य बद्ध्वा वा यदि वः संशयो युधि।
तदाशेषायुधैः सर्वैरसुरैर्विनिहन्यताम्॥ २३॥
Transliteration
he caṇḍa he muṇḍa balairbahubhiḥ parivāritau |
tatra gacchata gatvā ca sā samānīyatāṁ laghu || 22||
keśeṣvākṛṣya baddhvā vā yadi vaḥ saṁśayo yudhi |
tadāśeṣāyudhaiḥ sarvairasurairvinihanyatām || 23||
English Translation
22-23. O Chaṇḍa, O Muṇḍa, You two go there accompanied by a huge army and bring her here easily by dragging by the hair or binding her. If you have doubts about doing this, then strike her in battle with all the weapons and all the Asuras.

॥ Chapter 006 ॥ Śloka 024 ॥

तस्यां हतायां दुष्टायां सिंहे च विनिपातिते।
शीघ्रमागम्यतां बद्ध्वा गृहीत्वा तामथाम्बिकाम्॥ २४॥
Transliteration
tasyāṁ hatāyāṁ duṣṭāyāṁ siṁhe ca vinipātite |
śīghramāgamyatāṁ baddhvā gṛhītvā tāmathāmbikām || 24||
English Translation
24.When she is struck and the lion felled, capture the Ambikā, bind her and come with her quickly.

॥ इति श्रीमार्कण्डेयपुराणे सावर्णिके मन्वन्तरे
देवीमाहात्म्ये षष्ठः ॥ ६॥
Transliteration
|| iti śrīmārkaṇḍeyapurāṇe sāvarṇike manvantare
Devīmāhātmye ṣaṣṭhaḥ || 6||
English Translation
Here ends the sixth of the Devi Māhātmya in Markandeya Purana during the period of Sāvārni, the Manu.
