॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 001 ॥

ॐ ऋषिरुवाच॥ १॥

Transliteration

om ṛṣiruvāca || 1||

English Translation

1.The Sage said:

Sanskrit

आज्ञप्तास्ते ततो दैत्याश्चण्डमुण्डपुरोगमाः।
चतुरङ्गबलोपेता ययुरभ्युद्यतायुधाः॥ २॥

Transliteration

ājñaptāste tato daityāścaṇḍamuṇḍapurogamāḥ |
caturaṅgabalopetā yayurabhyudyatāyudhāḥ || 2||

English Translation

2.Then receiving the command, the Asuras headed by Chaṇḍa and Muṇḍa, fully equipped with arms, marched with the full fourfold complement of the armies.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 003 ॥

Sanskrit

ददृशुस्ते ततो देवीमीषद्धासां व्यवस्थिताम्।
सिंहस्योपरि शैलेन्द्रशृङ्गे महति काञ्चने॥ ३॥

Transliteration

dadṛśuste tato devīmīṣaddhāsāṁ vyavasthitām |
siṁhasyopari śailendraśṛṅge mahati kāñcane || 3||

English Translation

3.They saw the Goddess on a lofty golden peak of the Himālayas, seated on her lion, smiling.

ते दृष्ट्वा तां समादातुमुद्यमं चक्रुरुद्यताः।
आकृष्टचापासिधरास्तथान्ये तत्समीपगाः॥ ४॥

Transliteration

te dṛṣṭvā tāṁ samādātumudyamaṁ cakrurudyatāḥ |
ākṛṣṭacāpāsidharāstathānye tatsamīpagāḥ || 4||

English Translation

4.Seeing her, they got excited and made effort to capture her. Some went near her with swords drawn and bows bent in readiness.

Sanskrit

ततः कोपं चकारोच्चैरम्बिका तानरीन्प्रति।
कोपेन चास्या वदनं मषीवर्णमभूत्तदा॥ ५॥

Transliteration

tataḥ kopaṁ cakāroccairambikā tānarīnprati |
kopena cāsyā vadanaṁ maṣīvarṇamabhūttadā || 5||

English Translation

5.Thereupon, the Mother became exceedingly angry towards those foes; and her face then became dark as ink, with anger.

Sanskrit

भ्रुकुटीकुटिलात्तस्या ललाटफलकाद्द्रुतम्।
काली करालवदना विनिष्क्रान्तासिपाशिनी॥ ६॥

Transliteration

bhrukuṭīkuṭilāttasyā lalāṭaphalakāddrutam |
kālī karālavadanā viniṣkrāntāsipāśinī || 6||

English Translation

6.From the plane of her forehead, furrowed with knitted eyebrows, immediately emerged forth Kālī of the terrible face, having the sword and the noose.

Sanskrit

विचित्रखट्वाङ्गधरा नरमालाविभूषणा।
द्वीपिचर्मपरीधाना शुष्कमांसातिभैरवा॥ ७॥

Transliteration

vicitrakhaṭvāṅgadharā naramālāvibhūṣaṇā |
dvīpicarmaparīdhānā śuṣkamāṁsātibhairavā || 7||

English Translation

7.She held a strange skull - topped staff, a garland of human skeletons, her ornament. Wearing for her garment a tiger skin she looked terrible with her body, all skin and bone.

Sanskrit

अतिविस्तारवदना जिह्वाललनभीषणा।
निमग्नारक्तनयना नादापूरितदिङ्मुखा॥ ८॥

Transliteration

ativistāravadanā jihvālalanabhīṣaṇā |
nimagnāraktanayanā nādāpūritadiṅmukhā || 8||

English Translation

8.A wide gaping mouth and her lolling tongue striking fear, with sunken eyes, all red, she filled the quarters with her roar.

Sanskrit

सा वेगेनाभिपतिता घातयन्ती महासुरान्।
सैन्ये तत्र सुरारीणामभक्षयत तद्बलम्॥ ९॥

Transliteration

sā vegenābhipatitā ghātayantī mahāsurān |
sainye tatra surārīṇāmabhakṣayata tadbalam || 9||

English Translation

9.She fell on the army, on the great Asuras fast, slaughtering them. And she devoured the army of the foes of the gods.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 010 ॥

Sanskrit

पार्ष्णिग्राहाङ्कुशग्राहयोधघण्टासमन्वितान्।
समादायैकहस्तेन मुखे चिक्षेप वारणान्॥ १०॥

Transliteration

pārṣṇigrāhāṅkuśagrāhayodhaghaṇṭāsamanvitān |
samādāyaikahastena mukhe cikṣepa vāraṇān || 10||

English Translation

10.With one hand, she took and put into her mouth the elephants, along with their guards on both the sides, the drivers with their spikes, the warrior-riders and the hanging bells.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 011 ॥

Sanskrit

तथैव योधं तुरगै रथं सारथिना सह।
निक्षिप्य वक्त्रे दशनैश्चर्वयन्त्यतिभैरवम्॥ ११॥

Transliteration

tathaiva yodhaṁ turagai rathaṁ sārathinā saha |
nikṣipya vaktre daśanaiścarvayantyatibhairavam || 11||

English Translation

11.Likewise, putting into her mouth the cavalry with their horses and the chariots with the charioteers she chewed them most frightfully with her teeth.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 012 ॥

Sanskrit

एकं जग्राह केशेषु ग्रीवायामथ चापरम्।
पादेनाक्रम्य चैवान्यमुरसान्यमपोथयत्॥ १२॥

Transliteration

ekaṁ jagrāha keśeṣu grīvāyāmatha cāparam |
pādenākramya caivānyamurasānyamapothayat || 12||

English Translation

12.She caught one by the hair, the other by the neck. She assaulted one with her foot and crushed the other by hugging to her chest.

तैर्मुक्तानि च शस्त्राणि महास्त्राणि तथासुरैः।
मुखेन जग्राह रुषा दशनैर्मथितान्यपि॥ १३॥

Transliteration

tairmuktāni ca śastrāṇi mahāstrāṇi tathāsuraiḥ |
mukhena jagrāha ruṣā daśanairmathitānyapi || 13||

English Translation

13.She caught in her mouth the arrows and the great missiles hurled by those Asuras and gnashed them in fury with her teeth.

Sanskrit

बलिनां तद्बलं सर्वमसुराणां दुरात्मनाम्।
ममर्दाभक्षयच्चान्यानन्यांश्चाताडयत्तदा॥ १४॥

Transliteration

balināṁ tadbalaṁ sarvamasurāṇāṁ durātmanām |
mamardābhakṣayaccānyānanyāṁścātāḍayattadā || 14||

English Translation

14.She pounded the entire army of the mighty wicked Asuras, devoured some and beat others.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 015 ॥

Sanskrit

असिना निहताः केचित्केचित्खट्वाङ्गताडिताः।
जग्मुर्विनाशमसुरा दन्ताग्राभिहतास्तथा॥ १५॥

Transliteration

asinā nihatāḥ kecitkecitkhaṭvāṅgatāḍitāḥ |
jagmurvināśamasurā dantāgrābhihatāstathā || 15||

English Translation

15.Some were struck by the sword; some were beaten by the staff with skull- top. Other Asuras perished lacerated by the edge of her teeth.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 016 ॥

Sanskrit

क्षणेन तद्बलं सर्वमसुराणां निपातितम्।
दृष्ट्वा चण्डोऽभिदुद्राव तां कालीमतिभीषणाम्॥ १६॥

Transliteration

kṣaṇena tadbalaṁ sarvamasurāṇāṁ nipātitam |
dṛṣṭvā caṇḍo’bhidudrāva tāṁ kālīmatibhīṣaṇām || 16||

English Translation

16.Seeing that the entire army of the Asuras was in a moment laid to the ground, Caṇḍa ran towards the terrible Kālī.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 017 ॥

Sanskrit

शरवर्षैर्महाभीमैर्भीमाक्षीं तां महासुरः।
छादयामास चक्रैश्च मुण्डः क्षिप्तैः सहस्रशः॥ १७॥

Transliteration

śaravarṣairmahābhīmairbhīmākṣīṁ tāṁ mahāsuraḥ |
chādayāmāsa cakraiśca muṇḍaḥ kṣiptaiḥ sahasraśaḥ || 17||

English Translation

17.The great Asura with terrific showers of arrows and Muṇḍa with discuses hurled in thousands covered her of terrific eyes.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 018 ॥

Sanskrit

तानि चक्राण्यनेकानि विशमानानि तन्मुखम्।
बभुर्यथाऽर्कबिम्बानि सुबहूनि घनोदरम्॥ १८॥

Transliteration

tāni cakrāṇyanekāni viśamānāni tanmukham |
babhuryathā’rkabimbāni subahūni ghanodaram || 18||

English Translation

18.Those innumerable discuses entering her mouth shone like so many orbs of the Sun entering in the midst of a cloud.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 019 ॥

Sanskrit

ततो जहासातिरुषा भीमं भैरवनादिनी।
काली करालवदना दुर्दर्शदशनोज्ज्वला॥ १९॥

Transliteration

tato jahāsātiruṣā bhīmaṁ bhairavanādinī |
kālī karālavadanā durdarśadaśanojjvalā || 19||

English Translation

19.Then Kālī of terrible face, laughed fiercely in wrath making a frightful noise, her gleaming teeth dazzling the eyes.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 020 ॥

Sanskrit

उत्थाय च महासिंहं देवी चण्डमधावत।
गृहीत्वा चास्य केशेषु शिरस्तेनासिनाच्छिनत्॥ २०॥

Transliteration

utthāya ca mahāsiṁhaṁ devī caṇḍamadhāvata |
gṛhītvā cāsya keśeṣu śirastenāsinācchinat || 20||

English Translation

20.Mounting on the great lion, the Devi hastened at Caṇḍa. Catching him by the hair, she severed the head with her sword.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 021 ॥

Sanskrit

अथ मुण्डोऽभ्यधावत्तां दृष्ट्वा चण्डं निपातितम्।
तमप्यपातयद्भूमौ सा खड्गाभिहतं रुषा॥ २१॥

Transliteration

atha muṇḍo’bhyadhāvattāṁ dṛṣṭvā caṇḍaṁ nipātitam |
tamapyapātayadbhūmau sā khaḍgābhihataṁ ruṣā || 21||

English Translation

21.Seeing Chaṇḍa fell, Muṇḍa hastened at her. She felled him too to the ground, striking him with the sword in his wrath.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 022 ॥

Sanskrit

हतशेषं ततः सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा चण्डं निपातितम्।
मुण्डं च सुमहावीर्यं दिशो भेजे भयातुरम्॥ २२॥

Transliteration

hataśeṣaṁ tataḥ sainyaṁ dṛṣṭvā caṇḍaṁ nipātitam |
muṇḍaṁ ca sumahāvīryaṁ diśo bheje bhayāturam || 22||

English Translation

22.Seeing Caṇḍa and the great warrior Muṇḍa vanquished, the remaining army left unslain, striken with terror, fled in every direction.

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 023 ॥

Sanskrit

शिरश्चण्डस्य काली च गृहीत्वा मुण्डमेव च।
प्राह प्रचण्डाट्टहासमिश्रमभ्येत्य चण्डिकाम्॥ २३॥

Transliteration

śiraścaṇḍasya kālī ca gṛhītvā muṇḍameva ca |
prāha pracaṇḍāṭṭahāsamiśramabhyetya caṇḍikām || 23||

English Translation

23.And K ālī bearing the heads of Chaṇḍa and Muṇḍa went up to Caṇḍika and said laughing all the while frightfully loudly.

**

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 024 ॥

Sanskrit

मया तवात्रोपहृतौ चण्डमुण्डौ महापशू।
युद्धयज्ञे स्वयं शुम्भं निशुम्भं च हनिष्यसि॥ २४॥

Transliteration

mayā tavātropahṛtau caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāpaśū |
yuddhayajñe svayaṁ śumbhaṁ niśumbhaṁ ca haniṣyasi || 24||

English Translation

24.In this sacrifice of battle I have brought to you here two victims, Chaṇḍa and Muṇḍa. You yourself will slay Śumbha and Niśumbha.

25.The Sage said:

तावानीतौ ततो दृष्ट्वा चण्डमुण्डौ महासुरौ।
उवाच कालीं कल्याणी ललितं चण्डिका वचः॥ २६॥

Transliteration

tāvānītau tato dṛṣṭvā caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāsurau |
uvāca kālīṁ kalyāṇī lalitaṁ caṇḍikā vacaḥ || 26||

English Translation

26.Then seeing the two great Asuras Chaṇḍa and Muṇḍa brought to her, the auspicious Candikā spoke nice words to Kālī.

**

॥ Chapter 007 ॥ Śloka 027 ॥

Sanskrit

यस्माच्चण्डं च मुण्डं च गृहीत्वा त्वमुपागता।
चामुण्डेति ततो लोके ख्याता देवी भविष्यसि॥ २७॥

Transliteration

yasmāccaṇḍaṁ ca muṇḍaṁ ca gṛhītvā tvamupāgatā |
cāmuṇḍeti tato loke khyātā devī bhaviṣyasi || 27||

English Translation

27.As you have come to me bringing Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, you will henceforth become famous in the world as Goddess Cāmuṇḍa.

Sanskrit

॥ इति श्रीमार्कण्डेयपुराणे सावर्णिके मन्वन्तरे देवीमाहात्म्ये सप्तमः ॥ ७॥

Transliteration

|| iti śrīmārkaṇḍeyapurāṇe sāvarṇike manvantare devīmāhātmye saptamaḥ || 7||

English Translation

Here ends the seventh of Devi Māhātmya in Markandeya Purana during the period of Sāvarni, the Manu.
